‘The Apparatus’
Some call it a structure
Some call it a framework,
Perhaps a philosophical outlook.
This market is laid out as a spatial framework.
An instrument for highly curated and well crafted foods within a previously developed cafe.
To instill curiosity and engagement a series of 18 foot tall displays made of steel plate and local pecan wood break down a large room into related, people scaled pieces.
As if you had a friend who went off the deep end into an endeavor and welcomed you to share in their findings.
An apparatus for curiosities and deliciousness for the mad professors + team at ThoroughBread Bakery.

Design Intent:
Dental work creates a great source of anxiety in people.
To help settle nerves and fear, the design of this building and interior orientates patients towards 2 protected Oak trees, while providing ample daylight and privacy.

Inspired by the work of Joseph Eichler and A.D.Stenger, this spec home was meant to blend into its 1950’s neighborhood, with modern belles + whistles. A bridge design, to bring the past to present.

Task: Design two neighboring spec homes
About:
Austin has some lovely new spec homes and some not so lovely ones. Most spec homes are caught in a scale change with awkward roofs, an architect’s idea mishmash or black + white super scaled ranch houses.
This is not any of that.
Some say a quiet neighbor is a good one.
As a reference to an award winning house designed in 1953 by the architect Herb Crume across the street, the architecture is a nod to his language of low slung roofs, wood ceilings, brick wall and indoor/outdoor spaces.
Each house is larger than those 1950s ones. 4 bedrooms, garages, with entertaining, storage and families thoughtfully considered.
